Call Waiting

Be sure to never miss an important call again! A tone during your telephone conversation notifies you that there is another call on your line. If you use Call Waiting and also subscribe to either Calling Number Delivery (sold separately) or Calling Number Delivery with Name (sold separately), you will receive the number and/or the name of the caller who is waiting. Please note, some caller ID display units may not work with this combination of features.

How to use Call Waiting:

When a tone is heard during your conversation, you know that there is another party on the line trying to reach you. Only you will hear the tone.

You have the following options:

  1. You may end your first conversation. Hang up and your telephone will ring; the second party is now connected.
  2. Put the first caller on hold while you answer the second call by quickly depressing the switchhook. You are now connected with the second party, with the first party on hold.
  • You can alternate between parties by depressing the switchhook, holding private conversations with each.
  • To end one conversation simply have that party hang up, and then depress the switchhook. You are connected with your remaining party.

Call waiting may be canceled on a per-call basis:

  1. Pick up the handset and listen for dial tone.
  2. Enter *70 on a touchtone telephone (1170 on a rotary telephone.)
  3. Place your telephone call as normal. No Call Waiting tones will be heard throughout this conversation.
  • The code *70 or 1170 – must be entered prior to placing a call.
  • Call Waiting resumes after the conversation ends.

Continuous Redial

This feature frees up your time by redialing busy numbers for you, and ringing to tell you when the line is free.

Service does not work on toll-free numbers, 900 numbers, numbers outside the specified service area, or on a line where call forward and some other call services have been activated.

How to use Continuous Redial:

  2. Enter *66 on a touchtone telephone. (1166 on a rotary telephone)
  3. If the line is still busy, hang up. Your phone will check the number for up to 30 minutes.
  4. A special callback ring alerts you if the line becomes free.(Some phones will ring normally.)
  5. Pick up the handset to automatically place the call.

To restart the 30-minute clock; repeat steps 1 – 3.

To Cancel:

  1. Depress the switchhook and release.
  2. Listen for dial tone.
  3. If you've already hung up, lift the handset and listen for dial tone.
  4. Enter *86 on a touchtone telephone. (1186 on a rotary telephone)
  5. Listen for a confirmation tone or announcement.
  6. Hang up.

Phantom Line

This feature allows two numbers to ring into a home or business on the same line with a different ringing pattern, and is commonly used instead of adding an additional line for a children’s line or a fax machine.

To establish Phantom Line:

Contact customer service the Hutchinson business office at 320-587-2323, or our Litchfield business office at 320-593-2323 or 1-800-303-7039 outside our calling area, to set up your phantom line. The phantom line is the second number and will have a distinctive ring from the first number.

Call Forwarding

Call Forward Don't Answer: Forward telephone calls to an alternate number if not answered by a specified number of rings.

Call Forwarding Busy: All telephone calls encountering a busy signal on your line are automatically forwarded to an alternate number.

Call Forwarding Remote: When you do not have an actual physical location or address within our exchange, calls forward to a remote location or a voice mailbox.

Call Forwarding Variable: Telephone calls are forwarded to an alternate number, local or long distance, by simply entering a code. Any toll charges incurred for calls forwarded to a long distance number will be billed to you.

Remote Access Call Forwarding: Allows you your call forwarding features from a remote location, local or long distance, by simply entering your code. For detailed instructions, contact a Customer Service Representative at our business office.

Call Forwarding Fixed: If you are away from your own telephone, calls can be forwarded to one alternate telephone number, by simply entering a code. Calls may forward to either a local or long distance telephone number. Any toll charges incurred for calls forwarded to a long distance number will be billed to you.

To Establish Call Forwarding:

Choose a telephone number, local or long distance, where calls should forward. (Note: The "forward to" number is usually that of a voice mailbox, but does not have to be.) Contact Customer Service at Hutchinson Telephone Company or Hutchinson Telecommunications Inc to initiate the call-forwarding feature. The alternate number will be programmed into the Hutchinson Telephone Company system.

For Call Forwarding Don't Answer: Determine how many times you would like your telephone to ring before it forwards to your alternate number; this will need to be programmed with your alternate number. Once the feature has been activated, your calls will forward to your alternate number if not answered after the specified number of rings.

For Call Forwarding Busy: All calls encountering a busy signal on your telephone line are automatically forwarded to the alternate number.

For Call Forwarding Remote: All calls are automatically and permanently forwarded to this alternate number. This will continue until the service is moved to a physical location within our exchange, or you discontinue the service. Once you would like your regular service restored, and have an actual physical address and location, inform Hutchinson Telephone Company.

The "forward to" number may be either local or long distance. Any toll charges incurred from calls forwarded to a long distance number will be billed to you. The "forward to" number may only be changed by Hutchinson Telephone Company. There is a charge for this change.

  2. Enter *72 on a touchtone telephone (1172 on a rotary telephone).
  3. Listen again for dial tone, then enter the local or long distance telephone number where you would like the calls forwarded.
  4. You will hear a telephone ring. When it has been answered, the forwarding has been established.
  5. If you receive a busy signal or no answer on the first attempt, hang up and repeat the process within two minutes.

Once you have repeated the process regardless of whether the call is answered, or if you again receive a busy signal, you will receive a confirmation tone that call forwarding has been established. Your telephone calls are now forwarded to that chosen number until you deactivate the feature from your telephone.

When entering a long distance number for forwarding, no second attempt is necessary if the call is not answered or a busy signal is received. Forwarding has been established.
